In PDP Mobile, we set up FCM routing by screen: tap a push, and the app opens exactly what you need — a request, news item, or chat. No “go find it yourself in the menu” quest 😅
We covered all 3 launch scenarios:
• cold start — the app was closed
• warm start — it was running in the background
• foreground — it was already open
We also added notification templates with automatic variable substitution — useful when there’s a lot of content and assembling texts by hand is no longer 2024.
On the security side, the important bit is: we encrypt FCM tokens symmetrically. And for UX, we added a notification center with history and read status.
In short, push stopped being just a “ping” and became a proper entry point into the product. In an era when retention is decided by details like these, this is a real must-have.
